3 Things To Look for in your top rated robot vacuums
You may have heard of laser mapping but if you’re not sure what it means I will try to explain it in layman’s terms and I will show you a video to show how it works in your home so you can see why you want this on your robot vacuum.
The early robot vacuums and some of the cheaper versions coming out now work by sending the vacuum on a random pattern to clean the room. It will go in a straight line until it encounters and object then it will go off on a tangent from there continuously so that over time it will cover the whole floor. This isn’t very time efficient and these vacuums will go until they run out of charge. They work better if you can put them in smaller rooms where they will cover more of the floor space. When these vacuums go back to the dock to recharge they can’t go back to where they were because they would need a map to show them where they have been.
This is the benefit of laser mapping, the robot vacuum will go around your room using it’s sensors to map the area and note the objects that it finds as it goes around the room. The vacuums work in a more linear pattern covering the room in a more efficient manner. Once they have mapped the rooms they will use that information the next time of cleaning and go through the cleaning quicker. The vacuums usually manage to cover the whole floor area in one pass and if they run out of charge they will be able to return to finish the job because it tracks it’s own progress as it cleans.

All of the newer robot vacuums are beginning to add in wi-fi control so that you have the option to use your robot vacuum via an app on your smartphone.
Not everyone wants this function and would prefer to have a vacuum that you can just press a button on the machine to set it off like the Roomba 650 but if you want the latest in technology then app control and having the ability to add an Alexa skill so that you can voice control is the way forward.
Most apps give you the option to set up a schedule for your cleaning, check if the vacuum has cleaned or it’s progress as it’s cleaning. You usually have notifications to let you know if the bin is full or whether you need to do regular maintenance (we’ll touch on that later). On some vacuums you can use the map function to add in a virtual wall so that you don’t need to lay down magnetic strips to stop your vacuum from straying into areas that you don’t want it to. You can usually do the basic controls too as well as with the voice function. The benefit of this smart functionality is that updates to software can be done easily and as feedback is given improvements can be made and passed on to customers very quickly.
Long battery life
Many of the newer robotic vacuums offer more suction and a larger floor coverage but none of that is much use if you only have a short battery life and need 3 to 4 runs to cover your whole floor. You’re looking for a battery life of 60-120 minutes because that time will lower if you have carpet. Carpets need more suction and if you have turbo or extra suction it in turn uses more power. If you only have hardwood floors then you will get the benefit of maybe getting your whole floor cleaned on one charge depending on the size of your home. You want your cleaning to be done quickly, efficiently and easily.
2. Top Rated Neato Robot Vacuum
The Neato D7 Connected is the newest version from Neato Robotics. It is probably the best rival to the iRobot roomba range and the only reason it isn’t No1 is that it doesn’t have as strong of a suction as the Roomba.
The Neato D7 is a D shaped robot opposed the popular circular shape and offers a large cleaning area across the straight edge of the robot vacuum. It does offer all of the features that you are looking for in a vacuum cleaner. It uses LaserSmart to map the rooms of your home and it even offers you virtual walls which you can draw on the map so that your vacuum will miss areas you don’t want it in.
You can easily set up your Neato robot vacuum with Alexa so that you can set the cleaning off by voice or you can use the app to schedule it to clean every day or as many days as you feel your house needs. You can check the progress of your vacuum on the app and use it to change modes on the go and it will return to the dock to recharge if it can’t complete the whole floor in one go.
The Neato D7 can clean for up to 120 minutes. You have different cleaning modes from Eco to Turbo so depending which you use will determine the length of the clean.
Customers are liking the D7 with 78% 5 and 4 star reviews and it does come in cheaper than the Roomba 980 the main issues people are finding are with the mapping function and virtual wall.
3. Top Rated Samsung Robot vacuum
The Samsung POWERbot R9350 is the latest in the Samsung family and it offers the main features required for a high end robot vacuum.
The POWERbot R9350 offers a mapping function and it maps the floor on the first run around the home. You can set it off to map without cleaning to make it quicker. The mapping should divide the area into rooms so that you can select certain areas to be cleaned when you want without having to do the whole floor. Customers are finding that this doesn’t work as well as they hoped in dividing it into rooms. It does manage to create an efficient cleaning path though so that the whole floor is covered.
There is a Samsung app to set up controls of your vacuum cleaner and it also has a remote control so that you can use that too. You can voice control with Alexa if you have a smart echo device. You can check the mapping and progress via the app and also do the basic control at the touch of a button.
The Samsung R9350 has 3 cleaning modes and that affects the time it can clean for, if you run it on Max mode which is the highest suction then you might only get 30-60 minutes of cleaning although you can improve that if you run it in normal or quiet mode. It is extremely good for cleaning up pet hair.
This vacuum is not generating as many 5 and 4 star reviews as the other 2 but I think that is more about the app software than it’s cleaning ability.
If you worry that having a robot vacuum will require more effort in maintenance than a standard vacuum cleaner then check out this video on a quick maintenance routine of the Roomba 980

4. iRobot Roomba 960 Robot Vacuum with Wi-Fi Connectivity powered by Lithium Ion
This iRobot 960 offers almost the same features as the 980, it can map your room and clean efficiently. It comes with the app and Alexa voice capability so you can still set it up and use it as part of your smart home.
It has a high suction power for cleaning carpets although not as powerful as the Roomba 980 and it can run for 75 minutes cleaning time. This has proven itself to be a good Roomba choice for customers and if you don’t mind having just a little bit less capability in power and run time you will can pick up the Roomba 960 for a lesser price.
5. Neato Botvac Connected Wi-Fi Enabled Robot Vacuum
The Neato Botvac Connected offers an acceptable alternative Neato to the D7. This Neato robot vacuum offers you a mapping option so that you always have your floor cleaned from corner to corner without missing any parts of it. You also have the option to link to Alexa for the voice options and the app will give you the ability to setup up scheduled cleaning and get notifications when the bin is full or maintenance is needed.
You have up to 120 minutes cleaning time with this Neato Botvac Connected and 2 cleaning modes turbo or eco. You will probably get longer cleaning time on the eco setting. This doesn’t have a virtual wall so you will have to use the magnetic tape which is included to keep your robot vacuum out of certain areas but it is a cheaper price so more affordable for more people. It has a lot of 5 star reviews so liked by the users.
6. Samsung POWERbot Star Wars Limited Edition – Darth Vader
If you’re looking for a robot vacuum with a very good price at this moment in time then check out our alternative Samsung vacuum the Samsung Powerbot Darth Vader.
The Darth Vader robot vacuum has the look of the helmet of this Star Wars character but it doesn’t affect this cleaner’s capabilities. You have the same mapping option as you have on all of the others so Darth Vader can clean in an efficient way over your whole room breathing a bit heavily as he goes. You do get Darth Vader comments as it goes about the cleaning business but you can turn this off if you don’t like it, the kids of course will love it.
You can set this up with Alexa and show off to your friends when they visit and you also get to set up controls and schedules using the app. It has powerful suction with a turbo option and edge clean for a great cleaning experience. It has up to 60 minutes cleaning depending on the the cleaning mode used. This is a very functional but fun robot vacuum that could fit perfectly into your smart home and on special offer at the moment.
