If you’re changing things in your home so that you have more things that you can control by voice through a controller device like the Amazon Echo Plus or Echo Dot which uses Alexa, then you will be interested in the Roomba 890 which has been designed to work by voice control as well as a smart phone app. You can ask your Roomba to clean, to stop and to return to the dock.
Once you have downloaded the app you can turn on the wifi on the Roomba and then you can set the schedule for cleaning. You can have your vacuum clean on a daily basis if you wish or less and you can set the times of cleaning to what suits your life. You can use the app to manually start to clean your house by pressing the clean button if you don’t want to schedule your cleaning or you want it to clean more than once. You can also set up notifications so that you can see if the dust bin is full or if your robot vacuum has got stuck somewhere.
Of course voice control isn’t the only thing your looking for in your robot vacuum, you also want and efficient cleaner that can work on all floor types and deal with pet hair which is a problem a lot of people have to deal with. The Roomba 890 works with the AeroForce 3-Stage Cleaning System to pick up the dirt and hair in your home. That uses tangle-free rotary brushes underneath which don’t clog up with hair stopping the capability of picking up dirt, there is also a side brush which allows it to pick up dirt from edges and corners and both of these sweep the dirt into the path of the power-lifting suction which on this vacuum is 5 x the power of the 600 and 700 series. All of this gives a great cleaning ability for a small vacuum and with a daily cleaning schedule your floor is always going to look clean.
The bin is has a sensor to tell you when it’s full so you know when to empty but it also houses a high-efficiency filter which is especially useful if you suffer from any allergies as it can capture up to 99% of pollen and dust. The filter can be tapped clean when you empty the bin, it’s easily removed and spares are available at Amazon.com
Once you set your iRobot Roomba 890 Robot Vacuum with Wi-Fi Connectivity to clean it works in a random pattern and will clean all around the floor area that it has access to for up to an hour. There will be no problem if you have mixed flooring as it can manage different floor levels and types by automatically adapting to the height. It uses on board sensors which help it negotiate around the furniture and deal with walls or other obstacles.
There is a dirt sensor included that detects excessive dirt on the floor and goes over it back and forth till it’s clean. There are also cliff sensors included so that your Roomba won’t fall down stairs or fall off a step. If you have a spill which needs a bit more intense clean you have the option of the spot clean function which cleans in a spiral so it can clear the spill efficiently. You just have to place your Roomba 890 in the centre of the spill and it will clean in a circle of around a 4 foot diameter. When the battery runs down the vacuum with head back to the dock to re-charge. This robot vacuum does not have the mapping capability to allow it to go back to where it finished it will just re-charge ready for the next days cleaning.
If you have areas in your house which you would like to close off so the vacuum doesn’t clean it you have included a virtual wall which you can set up to give a barrier in a straight line, so you can close off a room without closing the door to allow pets to move about, you can also set it up in front of an item that you don’t want bumped and it will create a barrier in a semi-circle around it.
Customers are liking the fact that this Roomba is easy to set up and use, it’s not too loud for a vacuum and the app can let you know if there are any issues with it. They have found it easy to set up with the Alexa app and then you can ask Alexa to ask Roomba to start cleaning and off it goes.
The negatives found are that it can get stuck often and can’t return to the dock to re-charge. It can still bump into things with enough force to move it if it is light so you need to find out any areas that might cause a problem and use your virtual wall to protect them.
This Roomba 890 offers a good cleaning ability and wi-fi control or voice control if that is important to you. The difference between this and the Roomba 690 is basically the extra suction power and dirt detection sensors. It’s in the mid price range under $500 and it’s worth keeping an eye on the product page at Amazon.com for any special offers and bundles available.
