iRobot Roomba 650 Robot Vacuum Overview

The Roomba 650 robot vacuum is one of the most popular robot vacuums at the moment because it offers good cleaning on all flooring with scheduling capabilities. Some of the main features are:

  • iAdapt Navigation uses a full suite of sensors to navigate and adapt to your changing home
  • 3-Stage Cleaning System agitates, brushes and suctions floors
  • Conveniently schedule up to 7x per week, or just press CLEAN on the robot
  • Automatically docks and recharges
  • Automatically adjusts to all floor types – carpet, tile, hardwood, laminate & more

Smart Navigation

The Roomba 650 uses the iAdapt Navigation system to move around your home using it’s sensors to detect objects and manoeuvre around them. It uses a random pattern changing direction as it encounters objects working around the area until it has covered the room. It has drop sensors so that it doesn’t fall off steps. It comes with a virtual wall which can create a barrier which the Roomba won’t cross which is useful if you want to stop it from going into certain rooms or if you want to protect certain objects from being bumped.

Simple push button operation

One of the best parts about a robot vacuum is that most of them can be scheduled to clean on a daily basis and the Roomba 650 is no different. The controls are on the top of the vacuum and you can set the time, set a cleaning schedule to clean once a day up to 7 days at a time of your choice. There is a clean button in the centre of the Roomba and if you want to you just have to press it and it will start cleaning, as simple as that. You can send it back to the dock to recharge with a button on the top and also to spot clean, which will clean in a spiral fashion outwards abut 3 feet if you have a spill, you just need to set the Roomba 650 in the centre of the spill.

3 stage cleaning system

The Roomba 650 uses agitation, brushing and suction. The agitation and brushing comes from the 2 rotating brushes underneath, 1 is a rubber brush and 1 is a bristle brush and between them they can lift dirt from any type of flooring, they lift the dirt and move it towards the suction opening into the dust bin. There is also a spinning side brush which can get into corners and edges along the wall and it flicks the dirt into the path of the brushes to be swept up. The Roomba 650 is particularly good at picking up pet hair whether on a hardwood floor or a carpet.

You’re going to have to pay more for the upgrades that iRobot have made but you also need to decide whether they are enough of an improvement for the difference in the price.

Multi room navigation

The virtual wall in the Roomba 880 has evolved into the Virtual Wall Lighthouse beacons, there are two functions to these lighthouses, one is to act as a beacon so the Roomba can clean more rooms on the same floor and keep track of itself through the beacons so it can easily return to the dock when it needs to recharge. The lighthouses can also switch over to being a virtual wall as in the original virtual walls.

Tangle Free Extractors

The 2 brushes underneath the Roomba 650 have now evolved into 2 counter rotating tangle-free extractors in the Roomba 880 which are both rubber with moulded patterns, these have been designed to lift dirt and hair without getting tangled up making maintenance a little easier and this vacuum great for picking up pet hair.
