How wonderful would it be to walk in from work and see a beautifully clean floor, freshly vacuumed and more important, not done by you. If you could dump this daily chore, would you?
If the answer is yes then you might be ready to find out more about the Roborock S5 Robotic Vacuum and Mop. This useful robotic assistant can not only vacuum your floors, automatically adjusting the suction for carpets, but it can also be fitted with a mop attachment to mop hard floors as well as vacuuming.
If you would prefer to make better use of your time and have the floor cleaning done whenever you need it, then check out this robot helper.
This circular robot vacuum from Roborock offers enough features to make it an interesting choice. The Roborock Company is situated in China, aiming to use technology to make life easier in the home with their robot vacuums.
The S5 comes in 3 colors Rose Gold, White or Black which could be a different prices depending on the color you want. At 13.8 inches in diameter and 3.8 inches high it doesn’t qualify for the smallest or slimmest of robot cleaners but it’s not massive either. If it’s important to you that you can clean beneath large pieces of furniture then you will need to check the height as you may need a slimmer robot vacuum.
This vacuum not only sweeps all floor types but can mop the floor too with a detachable mop fitting. Roborock have tried to make it easy to fit as you just slide it on the base without you having to turn the unit upside down to fit it or remove it. This is only useful if you have hard washable floors but you have the option of sucking up the dirt and wet wiping the floor at the same time. It can manoeuvre over different levels up to 2cms high allowing it to move over door sills and rugs if required.
The vacuum includes a filter which is fitted into the dust bin. The top of the Roborock S5 lifts up so that you can lift out the dustbin quickly and easily for emptying. It holds around 500ml of dirt which is average among current robot vacuums. The amount of times you will have to empty the bin depends on if you have shedding pets and how often you set up your vacuum to clean.
How it Cleans
The Roborock S5 robotic vacuum is capable of cleaning all types of flooring, the mopping attachment gives you an extra cleaning capability on hard floors and the extra suction that kicks in for carpets means that you are covered if you have carpets.
Although this robot has sensors to detect carpets it can’t avoid carpets if you have the mop attached so you will need to use the virtual wall or zone cleaning function if you have mixed flooring and you want to mop the hard floors that you have.
The vacuum has a rotary brush on the bottom which picks up most types of dirt and hair and a side brush to help get into the edges and corners of the room.
You can start your S5 manually by pressing the start button on the top of the unit, use the app that you can use for scheduling and zoning or you can set it up to start with a voice command using Alexa. Some people have found this hard to set up but customer services are very helpful in resolving problems.
You also have 2 other button options on the top of the vacuum which are spot clean and return to dock. The docking unit needs to be set up in an open area against a wall so that the robot vacuum can locate it when it runs out of charge. It would normally send itself back to be charged but you can send it yourself manually.
The spot clean can be used for a spill or a particular dirty spot you want to clean specifically. Place the Roborock in the area to clean, it will cover an area of 1.5m x 1.5m and clean in a back and forth pattern.
There are different cleaning modes that can be chosen, carpet, quiet, mopping, balanced, turbo & max. The automatic selection is the balanced mode, it will detect carpets and adjust the suction to a stronger action. This is all automatic so that you can get the most efficient use of your cleaning time.
The quiet mode is great if you want to use it when your family is watching tv and you don’t want to be too aware of the noise in the background. The turbo and max mode will give really strong suction, it will use up your battery quicker and will be more noisy but if you have a lot of carpet or if you have a lot of pet hair on the floor, you may feel that you need to use it.
Use the map to create a cleaning zone
for specific areas
When it comes to cleaning the S5 is very clever. There is a LSD (laser distance sensor) on the top of the robot vacuum which scans the room and creates a real time map. Then it uses this map to work out the best cleaning route.
The vacuum will clean around the edge of the room, spinning the side brush faster when it is doing the edges, then it will go back and forth avoiding furniture in its path until it has cleaned the whole floor.
You do have options within the app to choose how many passes you want to have so you can have a more thorough clean when you feel you need it.
The vacuum will also know where it is in the cleaning route so that if it runs out of power it will return to be recharged on the docking unit then go back to complete the cleaning job. This is a very efficient way of cleaning and hands free on your part unless your robot gets stuck anywhere.
Roborock S5 App
Using the ‘MI Home app’ you have wi-fi control using your smartphone. You have options of different languages, although it may be defaulted to Chinese.
Start your cleaning whether you’re at home or even if you’re out shopping and want it done before you get home. Even easier than this is creating a cleaning schedule so that you don’t even have to think about it, your vacuuming is done at the time you choose automatically, daily or as many days as you need.
There’s nothing better than coming home to a clean floor, all you have to make sure of is that you pick up any small toys or items that might have been left there. That’s a great habit to get into at the end of the day.
Once your Roborock S5 robot vacuum sets off to clean it creates a map which is stored in the app. This app lets the robot know where it needs to clean and where it has already been.
One of the clever options within the map is setting a virtual wall where you don’t want any cleaning done. Just draw on the screen where you want the wall to be and the vacuum won’t pass it. You can also set a cleaning zone, just draw the zone on the map and your Roborock will head straight there and clean it for you.
This is great if you have a specific area you would like cleaned, like the dining room after the evening meal. You even have the option within the app to go to manual control and it will give you a joystick option to move the robot in any direction you want to send it. You can use this if you’re robot gets stuck somewhere and you can’t be bothered to get up and move it.
The app can also give you notifications if the dustbin get’s full or the water tank on the mop attachment runs dry which is usually after about 45 minutes of mopping. You also get any firmware updates for your robot vacuum when they become available.
You get up to 2.5 hours of cleaning time on a full charge with the battery installed. That can make all the difference in whether your vacuum can cover your floorspace in one run or have to return to the dock to charge back up then resume cleaning.
If you want to mop the floors as well as vacuum then you have to set that up when you are there as you can’t leave the water tank attached to the robot vacuum as it is sitting charging on the docking unit. Water and electric don’t always mix well. You can just clip on the mop when you need to and send it to clean if you have all hard floors or set up a cleaning zone if you have mixed flooring.
The mopping cloth can be washed in the washer or rinsed out after use. The clip on water tank can just be rinsed out and emptied after you have finished mopping. You do get 2 cloths in the box.
It’s worth emptying the dustbin every night after the vacuum has been in use but in the beginning you might find you have to do it more often as it is a very effective cleaner.
You can tap off the filter to get the worst of the dust off but it is worth knowing that it is washable too, although it will need around 24 hours to fully dry before you use it again.
The spares you might require like the filters can be purchased as accessory kits online. With it being washable you won’t need to buy lots of them but having one to use and one to wash is useful.
The Roborock S5 is priced in the mid range around $500 depending on special offers. This is reasonably priced in my opinion for the technology that it offers which is on a par with some of the top rated robot vacuums that offer room mapping. You also get the option of floor mopping which isn’t required by everyone but most people have some areas in their home that have a washable floor.

Customers on Amazon who have left a Roborock S5 robotic vacuum and mop review are really liking what features are included with this cleaner. Especially the room mapping, the control available from the app on the phone. There is good suction and it manages to clean and transition from hard floor to carpet. They do feel that it is a little bit limited in how well it handles corners and some people have had issues linking to Alexa but overall the majority of buyers are satisfied with the standard of cleaning and the price.
If the robot vacuum that you want needs to have the latest technology but not be the most expensive item in the store then this Roborock S5 Robotic Vacuum and Mop will satisfy. The boosted power on carpets, the laser mapping and the virtual zone cleaning are features usually only found on the latest, highest priced versions of robot vacuums. This also offers a floor mopping option.
