The Neato robot vacuum’s are well known by their D Shape design. This gives them the opportunity to use the widest side for the brush to give you the best floor cleaning. The D7 Connected is just over 13 inches wide, 12.5 inches long and 3.9 inches high. This isn’t the lowest profile robot vacuum on the market but it is only a smidgen higher than the iRobot Roomba 980 which is probably it’s closest rival in technology.

How it cleans

Your Neato D7 Connected will come from it’s base into the room and map the area, it will work out the most efficient way to clean and set off to do that. If you have a large house it will take the map then divide the area into sections and will clean each section in turn. It will usually try to clean one room completely before it moves onto the next. If you just want to clean one room you can place it into the room, close the door and start it cleaning, it will clean the room and stop at the same place in which it started.

There is a new design of brush in this new Neato D7 which is better for picking up pet hair and dust. It’s a full 10.9 inches long covering a larger area and the side brush collects it from any difficult to reach areas. The Neato uses it’s own corner clever technology to make sure it can clean right into corners. There is a good size dust bin that is accessed on the top of your vacuum and it includes an ultra performance filter to keep the air cleaner for anyone with allergies.

It automatically adjusts itself to clean on any floor type so it can clean carpets as well as hard floors even if you have both. There is also a spot clean mode if you have a spillage in one area.

There are 3 cleaning modes that can be used for your Neato robot vacuum, eco, turbo and extra care modes. The turbo is the default mode which sets everything like the brush and suction to high so you get the deepest clean. Eco sets everything to a medium setting so that you can cover a larger area on one charge and it runs more quietly. The extra care mode is used when you have delicate areas that the vacuum could knock over it then navigates more carefully around leaving a larger buffer.

Recharge and resume

Your run time on the Neato Robotics D7 Connected is around 120 minutes depending on whether it is cleaning carpet or hard floor. The vacuum will map your floors so that it cleans in the most efficient way but if you have a large area to clean and it can’t complete the floor cleaning in one charge it will return itself to the dock to re-charge the battery and then return to the place it stopped at and carry on until it’s finished.

Charging dock

This Neato Connected comes with a charging dock that need to be situated flat against a wall with approximately 3 foot clearance to the sides and the front of it. This space is required to allow the robot vacuum to manoeuvre itself onto the dock correctly so that it can charge. The charging points are located on the rounded edge of the vacuum and it needs a full charge before you start to use it.

Alexa and Google Home

Using the Alexa app and an Alexa device you can pair with this Neato D7 robot vacuum and use voice control to send your vacuum to clean. Alexa can ask the Neato to clean, pause from cleaning, stop cleaning, resume cleaning, ask for the battery level and ask where it is.

App control

Once you have your Neato Robotics D7 Connected Wi-Fi Enabled Robot Vacuum charged you need to pair it with the Neato app so that you can set your cleaning schedule. You just need to download the app from the app store or google play, open the app and create an account. Follow the directions for setting up a new robot. Once your robot vacuum is paired with the app you can start cleaning manually or set up a schedule.

You can choose which days you want your robot vacuum to clean and what time. You can set it for every day if you want to and you can check it’s progress with the app if you aren’t at home. You have the option to map your rooms quickly by using the discovery mode which will send your robot out to map without cleaning. You can then access the maps to add any virtual walls you might need before cleaning.

Virtual no go lines

It’s very easy to set up the no go lines, just go into the app and click on the my floorplan icon to bring up the floor map. Click on the line button at the bottom of the screen and it will allow you to create a line on the map using your finger. You can adjust it by touching and dragging one of the points of the line. You can also have more than one line on the map. This is perfect if you want it to bypass certain areas like your dogs food and water bowls or areas it gets stuck in. You need to use the app to set off the cleaning if you want it to see your no go lines. This is a lot easier than using magnetic strip.

Customer Opinion

There aren’t many customer reviews at this moment in time as it is a newer product, but from what the buyers are saying they love the fact that this Neato D7 can cover a large floor area on one charge, they like the no go lines which make sectioning off areas much easier. They don’t think it is too loud even in turbo mode and have found that the robot vacuum can get back to the dock fairly easily.

The only negatives found are the floor mapping feature only allowing one floor map at this moment in time so you can’t have one for downstairs and upstairs.

Verdict

This Neato Robotics D7 Connected Wi-Fi Enabled Robot Vacuum is the newest version of the Botvac connected range. It has improved it’s length of cleaning time, it’s mapping capabilities by including the virtual no go lines. They have improved the brush and the filter and made it a good alternative to the Roomba 980 for a lesser price. It’s not cheap but if you like the latest gadgets this is definitely one to consider.
