Roomba 980 Overview

The iRobot Roomba 980 follows the circular design of the previous Roomba cleaners. The 980 consists of dual circular brushes underneath which pick up dirt, dust and pet hair as it moves through the room and it incorporates a side brush to tackle around chair legs and for getting into those difficult areas.

The robot vacuum comes with a docking unit where it charges up in between cleans so it is always ready to go when you need it. The Roomba 980 has the ability to clean for up to 120 minutes in a single run depending on the floor surface and is the most powerful Roomba, perfect for a large house.

To set up and control your robotic vacuum you need to download the app and link to your wi-fi. There you can set up a schedule if you wish or just set your Roomba to clean. If you already have smart items in your home which are controlled by Alexa then this 980 will fit right in as it can also be voice controlled.

When you set your vacuum to clean it will use the sensors on board to map the room as it goes. It will calculate the size and shape of the room and the objects within it. Robot vacuums that use a mapping function tend to clean in a linear fashion moving up and down going around objects but ultimately covering every inch of each room until it’s finished. As it maps the area it works out the most efficient path to clean and each time it cleans the same room it will get a bit quicker as it uses the same maps.

You can set up in the app whether you want your Roomba to clean with a single pass through or a double pass for a deeper clean. The 980 can deal with any type of flooring and move between them with automatic adjustment. Drop off sensors stop it from falling down steps or stairs but it can cause a few issues if you have rugs with lines on that it might think are edges. At 3.6 inches high it can fit under furniture with a high enough gap meaning you don’t have to move it. This Roomba 980 gives you the best of all features.

Roomba 960 Overview

The Roomba 960 is a great robot vacuum although not the latest revision from iRobot. It is the same size and design as the 980 and can boast many of the same features. The same app is used on all wi-fi controlled Roomba’s and you schedule and control the functions in the same way. If you want to voice control your Roomba you just need an Amazon Echo device and you’re all set.

You have the same cleaning brushes and filters so that this robot vacuum will pick up dust and dirt the same way. The suction on the iRobot 960 isn’t as strong as the 980 but is quite sufficient to give a good clean of your floors. You also have the same option to do a single or double pass when cleaning for a deeper clean if you need it. There are dirt detect sensors installed too so if it finds an area which has a bit more dirt it will go over it a couple of times just the same as you would if you were cleaning.

You don’t have quite as much battery power in the Roomba 960 but the good thing about having mapping sensors is that they know where they have cleaned so if you run out of charge the 960 will return to the dock to recharge then go back to where it was to carry on.

In the box there is a virtual wall lighthouse which you can use as a beacon when doing multiple rooms as it help guide the Roomba back to the dock and you can use it to create a barrier to stop the Roomba from going into a set area. This Roomba 960 is not an inferior vacuum and is worthy of consideration.
