The iRobot Roomba 880 is one of the 800 range of iRobot vacuums. It is the normal circular design. The cleaning system used is the AeroForce 3-Stage Cleaning System . This cleaning system uses the new generation 2 motor which improves the performance of the cleaning capabilities of the Roomba 880 up to 5 x more than the Roomba 650.
It has dual counter-rotating rubber extractors, these are moulded in a way that makes picking up debris and pet hair from any type of floor surface better with less tangles on the rollers, which also will need less maintenance in keeping the hair cleared. The main maintenance required is emptying the bin, cleaning the filter and any dirt that gets around the extractors or wheels.
The 880 uses iAdapt Multi-Room Navigation, it will clean in all areas it can get to, it isn’t as random as the Roomba 650 there is a bit more logic to the way it cleans. It can use a spiralling motions to clean a concentrated area like in the spot cleaning mode, it can also clean by navigating the perimeter then negotiating any obstacles in the room, it might also criss cross the room to get full cleaning.
The robot vacuum comes with 2 lighthouses which are virtual walls and also beacons. If you have a large floor area to clean you can set the lighthouse beacon on and it will help the Roomba come back to it’s docking base. If you want to only clean 1 room or block off certain areas these virtual walls can be switched over to become virtual walls.
This robot vacuum comes with a remote control which gives you a little freedom to move the vacuum around to where you want using the arrow buttons, you can also use it to start your cleaning process or send it back to the dock for recharging. If you have a spill and want to spot clean you can move the vacuum to the centre of the spill with the remote and then press the spot clean so it can spiral around to clean, it will cover about 3 feet in diameter.
You can also set a cleaning schedule on this robot vacuum by using the buttons on the top of the unit. You first need to set the time and then you can schedule the cleaning at any time of the day, once a day for up to 7 days. There is also on the top of the unit an anti-tangle light, a troubleshooting light and a bin full light.
The bin can hold a reasonable amount of dirt, not as much as a regular vacuum cleaner but it should be sufficient to clean on a daily basis. The iRobot Roomba 880 is pretty efficient at picking up rubbish so the first couple of times you use it don’t be surprised if you have to clean out the bin in the middle of the clean. The bin houses the high-efficiency filter which is easy to install and remove for cleaning. The vacuum has a dirt detection sensor which can identify high dirt areas and will clean them more intensively. When the vacuum runs down on charge it will return itself back to the docking station to recharge ready for the next time.
Each version of the Roomba improves something and the iRobot Roomba 860 was the previous version which offered most of the features of the 880. The main difference between the roomba 880 vs 860 is the multi room capability with the lighthouses. The most recent version of the iRobot Roomba is the 980, there are a few differences between the iRobobt Roomba 880 vs 980, the main one being the floor mapping capability. When customers have bought the Roomba vacuums over the Neato they have found them to be better at cleaning carpets and have a longer cleaning time before charging. Buyers have found that this Roomba 880 is reasonably quiet while in use even on hardwood floors and it navigates quite well around furniture. They find it easy to maintain and the bin full light makes it easy to know when to empty the bin to keep the Roomba working to the best efficiency. The Roomba reviews also find that the lighthouses make it easy to shut of areas that you don’t want to clean.
The negatives noted are some people found it didn’t clean carpets well enough, that it gets stuck too often and some people found it stopped working properly after a while.
The iRobot Roomba robot vacuums are the most well known and popular make of robot vacuum. The Roomba 880 is a very good cleaner especially if you have pets and it works as well on carpets as well as hard floors.
