I was surprised to find just what it can do as well as what it can’t.

In this overview of the Roomba 690 robot vacuum I’m going to give you the iRobot Roomba 690 Pros and Cons as I see them so you can rule it in or out of your shortlist.

iRobot Roomba 690 Overview

The Roomba 690 is part of the iRobot 600 series. This is a wi-fi controlled robot vacuum which uses an app to set up the scheduling function and to manual set it to clean, even when you aren’t at home. This is also compatible with voice control devices like Alexa and Google Assistant. You can set the 690 to clean on a daily basis or the number of days a week you would like at a time that suits you. Most people invest in a robot vacuum because of it’s ability to clean automatically without help from you.

The Roomba 690 has a 3 stage cleaning system and it automatically adjusts to different floor surfaces so it doesn’t matter if you have carpets, hard floor or a mix of both. It can pick up all sizes of particles and the filter in the dust bin will filter out a lot of the dust particles making the air a lot cleaner if you have allergies. It cleans the room in a random pattern which isn’t the most efficient way of cleaning but it does a surprisingly good job of cleaning up dirt and pet hair. It has sensors to allow it to detect objects but it can bump into objects.

With a height of 3.6 inches it can fit under some furniture to get at places you wouldn’t be able to unless you moved the furniture. The Roomba 690 can run for up to 60 minutes, when it runs out of charge it will send itself back to the dock to recharge. This means that your vacuum is always ready and charged when it’s needed. There is a small amount of maintenance to be done like emptying the dustbin and cleaning or changing the filter. You may have to clean the brushes and wheels underneath on a regular basis to keep it working at it’s best. Let’s move onto the Pros and Cons.

Wi-Fi Controlled and Works with Alexa

People loved the Roomba 650 but it didn’t come with a remote control and didn’t work with an app. That has been addressed in the Roomba 690 which is wi-fi controlled via the iRobot app. With the app you can do the basics which you can do with the buttons, clean, spot clean and return to dock. You have to do your daily scheduling via the app on this robot vacuum, you can also use the app to check whether it has done it’s scheduled clean. If you have invested in an Amazon echo so you can voice control items in your home then you can set it up to send your Roomba to clean when you tell it to, stop what it’s doing or to go back to the dock.

Works well picking up pet hair

All of the iRobot vacuums have a good suction and 3 stage cleaning system which makes them extremely good at picking up pet hair. There are 2 brushes underneath that work together to release dirt and sweep it up into the suction. There is also a side brush which is angled in a way that it can get right into the edges of the carpet where it meets the wall. This vacuum also has a dirt detect sensor which detects high usage areas and it will spiral around it to give it a good clean.

If you’re looking for an iRobot Roomba but don’t want to pay a lot of money for one then this Roomba 690 is a good option. It is one of the lowest priced Roomba’s even though you get wi-fi control. It doesn’t offer all the same features as the top of the range Roomba 980 but it does give good pick up on all surfaces. It has a good running time of around 60 minutes and can be scheduled for daily cleaning. It’s worth checking with as there are often special offers, check the banner above for the current price.

No room mapping- misses spots

The iRobot Roomba 690 cleans in a random pattern, it works in a straight line until it meets an object then it changes direction. It moves around in this manner till it’s covered the whole floor. With the nature of the randomness you can find that the vacuum can clean over an area more than once or miss certain parts of the floor. If you are cleaning on a schedule the chances are it will cover any missed parts the next time it cleans. iRobot only has full room mapping on it’s 900 series.

Can get stuck and not return to dock

Sometimes when the iRobot 690 gets into a room it can get stuck in certain areas. It can have problems with dark borders on rugs because it thinks its the edge of a drop. Sometimes it can’t sense the dock depending where it is in the room or if it is in another room and it can’t get back to it. It can be placed back on the dock easy enough or you can see if you can move the dock to a clearer area.

Can knock over items

When you get a Roomba 690 or any other robot vacuum it’s worth watching it the first time to see if it has any problems with items in your room. You will need to pick up items that it could suck up including moving wires out of range. If you have tall floor vases or narrow tables that could be knocked over you will need to move them or use the virtual wall to protect them from the vacuum.

The iRobot Roomba 690 for the majority of buyers is a great piece of equipment that does the job it’s supposed to do. If you’re looking for a cheaper iRobot vacuum but you want to be able to use an app to control it then this is the one for you. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this cleans, hope you will be too.
