The basic instructions are, you switch it on and it will traverse around your room, or rooms, sweeping the floor and negotiating itself around the furniture and along the walls. Depending on the gap under your sofas and beds it can also sweep under there. Usually they are sensitive enough to negotiate the change in surface of the floors, if you have carpet or mats. The IAdapt navigation allows the Roomba 650 to move around your rooms, finding it’s way around pieces of furniture, sweeping as it goes along. It has a full suite of sensors including cliff sensors at the front and side, to stop it falling down stairs or steps and it doesn’t necessarily go in a straight line but it will work itself around the rooms you wish to clean. It has a docking system which needs to be placed in an open area, allowing the machine easy access to return to it.

The  iRobot Roomba 650 is 3.6 x 13.4 x 13.4 in, which allows it to fit under pieces of furniture that have about 4 in of clearance. It has a little 3 pronged side brush, which flicks the dust under the unit into the suction, helping keep clean right up to the edge of the wall. There is also a rotating brush under the machine as in a standard vacuum cleaner, and it has a rubber rotating brush to really clean on a hard floor, all great for cleaning up dirt and pet hair.

This vacuum has a scheduling function which allows you to conveniently schedule up to 7x per week so you can set a cleaning schedule to suit you, from 1 day per week to every day of the week. It also has a 60 min run time, the unit can sense when the battery needs recharging and it will automatically dock and recharge, if not in the same room it might not be able to find the docking unit and just stop where it is and you will need to take it to be recharged.

The scheduling function is easy to set up, you need to set the time first by pressing the clock button and using the day, hour and minute buttons to set it, after you have set the time you can set the schedule by pressing the schedule button and using the day, hour and min buttons for the days and time you want your Roomba 650 to clean for you.

The iRobot Roomba 650 works really well on hard floors but can automatically adjust to clean carpets or mats just as well if required.

There is a clean button in the centre of the unit which switches it on manually, so you don’t have to schedule cleaning, you can just start it when you are there. There is also a manual dock button, so you can send it to be docked if you notice the battery needs charging.  If you spill something, you can set the machine in the centre of the spill and press the spot button which will set the machine going in a spiral, approximately 1 metre out then back.

Virtual walls

In this iRobot Roomba 650review you will see it is well built and it has a bumper on the  front edge so that it is aware of obstacles. It comes with a virtual wall, which runs off 2 C batteries, that you can set up as a straight infra red line, up to 10 feet, which helps you limit where you want the Roomba to go. You can also set this virtual wall with a halo line, which allows you to set a semi-circle of 2 feet around something you don’t want the Roomba to bang into, for example your pet food or a vase. If it does bang into light pieces of furniture it can move it a little, so it’s worth checking before you let it loose on it’s own that you have nothing on these pieces of furniture that can fall off and break.

irobot roomba 650 reviews

The iRobot Roomba 650 needs to be checked every couple of weeks to make sure that the underneath brushes and wheels aren’t getting clogged up with hairs or threads that can stop the wheels and brushes turning easily. This can affect the life of the battery because it will be harder for the wheels to turn and may need to use more battery power to do the same job. The battery life is about 1-2 years with normal use and regular maintenance.

It is easy to maintain by removing the brushes, they clip out and in, and cleaning them with the tool supplied, especially if you have pets and a lot of pet hair. If you want to know how to empty the Roomba 650, you just slide the dustbin out of the side of the unit and tip it into your rubbish bin. Tap out the filter to remove the dirt trapped on it. Extra filters and brushes are readily available if required.

Customer Opinion

Good Points

One customer loves this Roomba  because she used to have to vacuum her floors almost daily, due to having 2 dogs. Now, the vacuum does the work for her. This is the recurring theme for people with pets.

Another customer just loves the fact that when they leave the house, this little bot is busy cleaning away, and when they get home the robot is sleeping and charging.

Bad Points

The main bad points that customers are seeing are to do with certain carpets which the Roomba 650 can’t handle. Carpets with large shag pile.

Another issue is the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any reason why it moves the way it does, and for some it takes too long.
