iRobot Braava jet 240 Review

Features

This iRobot Braava jet 240 can clean any floor that you would normally mop. It’s a small size at 6.7 x 7 x 3.3 inches so it can manage to clean in bathrooms and around toilets quite well. It’s also small enough to get under cabinets in the kitchen so it can clean right up to the edges. It cleans well around the edges of the room and get right into the corners.

Cleaning Pads

The mop comes with 3 types of iRobot braava jet pads, wet mopping, damp sweeping and dry sweeping. You just need to attach a pad on the base of the unit and press the clean button and it will automatically select the right cleaning method due to the holes punched into the card on the back of the pad. There is an option to buy re-usable pads for the wet mopping which can be washed out. They obviously won’t have cleaning solution built in so you may want to spray the pad before you start or spray the floor.

Vibrating head

When the robot mop uses the mopping or damp sweeping mode it gently vibrates the head scrubbing dirt and stains from the floor as it goes. It has a precision jet spray that wets the floor and there is a cleaning substance in the cleaning pad so you don’t need to add it to the water tank.

The benefit of using disposable pads is that you don’t have to wash them, when your robot is finished cleaning you just have to hold it over a bin and press a button, the used pad will drop straight into the bin and you won’t have to even touch it.

Run time

This Braava jet 240 mop has sensors underneath which helps it to avoid stairs or carpets. It can run for about 20 minutes per charge and that will clean around 200 square feet if your only sweeping the floor and it will cover 150 square feet if you are mopping. This equates to about 2 rooms. If you have a larger room there is a virtual wall function built in which is easy to set and you can then split your room in half to make it easier.

Charging

Unlike the Roomba 650 it doesn’t come with a docking station. There is a plug in charger and the Braava jet 240 battery slots into it. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to charge it right up. Or you can buy a spare battery to have one on charge while the other is being used.

Cleaning functions

When the Braava 240 starts cleaning, it knows which cleaning style to use based on the holes in the card backing. When it just sweeps or damp mops it uses long straight lines to clean. You set it down in the bottom left of your room and it will move in a linear pattern till it gets to the end of the right side of the room. It will then work around the perimeter and finally it will pick up anything it thinks it has missed before it stops.

The damp clean just uses a more abrasive cloth but follows the same path. The wet mopping has a curved action that moves the mop over the same part twice as well as vibrating the mop head although it ultimately works in straight lines. It also sprays water on the floor, the cleaning solution is already in the pad. Because it covers a bit more floor space in it’s action, that is the reason it can only do 150 square feet.

There is a spot clean function as well which covers around 4 x 4 feet, great if you have had a wet spill.

Customer Opinion

This little robotic mop gets some good reviews from customers, they love the fact that it is small, this helps it get around objects much easier. They also like the fact that you can have disposable pads or re-usable washing pads which keeps the cost of replacements down. They feel that it does a good job of picking up dirt and hair with the wash cycle.

The negatives found were that it struggled to get in the grouting of tiled floors, some people felt it didn’t hold enough water and others felt it just didn’t clean well enough for them.

Verdict

This iRobot Braava jet 240 Robot Mop is a great little device, it won’t give your house a deep clean but it can be easily used on a daily basis to keep surface dirt to a minimum. It’s a quiet robot and non intrusive if you are trying to listen to the phone or the tv. You’ll hear it a little more when it’s wet mopping. It’s not the cheapest gadget to have in your home but if you have to mop your floors anyway and you hate it then this can be a price you’re willing to pay.
