Today we’re going to look specifically at the iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner.
If you’re wondering what’s the best Roomba vacuum for pet hair, you will find that all of the Roomba vacuum cleaners can all handle pet hair and floor type very well, but in our opinion we think that the Roomba 980 is the winner for pet hair.
We’ll be looking at what features we think are required to be good for cleaning up pet hair and why we choose the Roomba 980 over the other versions of Roomba.
Best features for cleaning pet hair
All Roomba’s have good suction but the newer versions have more powerful motors. The iRobot Roomba 980 Robot Vacuum has 10 x the suction power of the standard Roomba 650, and if you’re looking at the difference between the iRobot Roomba 980 vs 960, apart from the Roomba 960 is cheaper, the power is 5 x more in the 980 and it can run for another 45 minutes for a total of 120 minutes on one charge. Being able to run longer is great for larger homes with a large floor space as there is more chance that your Roomba can clean your floor in one pass. With better suction your vacuum is going to be able to pick up a greater amount of hair and any other debris brought in by your pets as well as yourselves.
All the Roomba vacuums come with dual counter-rotating extractors. The older versions have a rubber extractor and a bristle rotary brush, the newer versions incorporate 2 rubber extractors that have a durable rubber tread design which grabs and breaks down dirt and debris. These rubber brushes work well on both hardwood floors and carpets and they are a tangle free design that don’t get clogged up with the pet hair so require less maintenance. There is also a side brush on all Roomba vacuums which concentrates on sweeping dirt from the edges of the floor and the corners into the path of the Roomba so it’s sucked up as it passes over.
Filters and dirt collection
The Roomba vacuums now have AeroForce filters, these filters can capture 99% of pollen and allergens which is also great for removing pet dander. The filter doesn’t make picking up pet hair better but it does help improve the air quality for anyone that suffers from allergies as it stops the smaller particles from getting back into the room. The filters fit into the dust bin which is a good size so that you can run your vacuum longer without having to empty it. The filter and dirt collection work together with the suction and brushes on the Roomba 980 to give a thorough clean.
Floor type capability
The floor type can affect how well your floor is cleaned for any kind of dirt and pet hair. If you have a hardwood floor suction is a big part of the cleaning process but the rotary brushes are important to sweep dirt into the suction, the rubber brushes on the Roomba robots are the best to get up dirt from hardwood floors. If you have carpets you need good suction to get into the pile of the carpet, the brushes agitate the pile to help clean in between. On the Roomba 980 there is a carpet boost option which improves the suction on carpets and you can select it using the app.
Cleaning under furniture
Part of the problem when you have a pet is that their hair can get everywhere, even if you vacuum often, if it has gotten underneath the furniture it can be hard to move it without a lot of effort. If you have a large enough gap under your large furniture a robot vacuum can get underneath and clean it much easier than you can. The Roomba robot vacuums have a machine height of 3.6 inches and if you have a large enough gap under your sofa or bed then it can clean it easily for you. The sensors on the robot vacuums let them manoeuvre around legs of furniture and objects in your house so it is much easier to vacuum up the pet hair.
Your pet’s hair will shed every day so if you can’t vacuum every day it will build up on the floor, especially if you have carpets where it can get trapped in the pile. It’s hard to make time to fit vacuuming into your day every day but with a robot vacuum you can schedule a daily clean at a time that would suit you. The good thing about that is you can let it clean your house even if you are out. The Roomba 980 is scheduled via an app and using it you can check if your Roomba has cleaned, whether you want it to use the carpet boost and you can even plan on whether you do 1 pass or 2 when it vacuums the floor.
The newer versions of the Roomba robot vacuums are more efficient at cleaning, they use floor mapping techniques to map the floors so that they can clean in one pass rather than random passes which makes for a better overall clean. Using an app means that you can keep track of where your vacuum has cleaned, if it’s charging, if it’s got stuck somewhere, if it needs emptying and even if it needs some regular maintenance. With the iRobot vacuums you can also set up virtual walls so if you want to clean your floors when you’re not there but you don’t want it to go into a certain room or area of a room to clean, maybe where your pets sleep, you can set the wall up to create an electronic barrier and your Roomba will clean around.
If you want to get the cheapest robot vacuum because that is what you’re budget allows then read our iRobot Roomba 650 Review as this is a pretty good vacuum all around, it will pick up your pet hair and it can be scheduled. It doesn’t use an app for control but for a little extra money you can try the iRobot Roomba 690 Robot Vacuum and get wi-fi control.
You will find any of the iRobot Roomba versions from the 650 upwards improves in it’s functions, the suction improves and the efficiency improves as the iAdapt 2.0 Navigation with Visual Localization is added, so you can choose any that your budget allows and get a great machine, but the latest is definitely the best. We believe that the iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner can do the best job at cleaning up after your pets.
