When you have invested your hard eared money on fitting a beautiful hardwood floor, you want to make sure that you are buying a vacuum that can deal with cleaning it. If you have decided that the best way to clean your hardwood floors is a robot vacuum cleaner then finding the best robot vacuum for hardwood floors 2017 is a priority for you.
In a growing industry like robotics there is a lot of choice of different types of vacuum and the price ranges can be quite high, so our job today is to highlight some robot vacuums that we believe will do the best job in cleaning your floor in the easiest, most efficient way.
We’ve looked at vacuums in different price ranges so you can have a good all round choice. The things that we looked for in these robot vacuums are, cleaning capability, mapping and programming options, pet hair and allergen filtration, running and charging time and price. Taking all these things into consideration is the reason that the Neato Botvac D5 Connected Navigating Robot Vacuum – Pet & Allergy is our no1 choice.
There is nothing that looks better in a home than a beautiful hardwood floor, but it can also look dirty very quickly, especially if you have pets. If you find yourself walking around in your stockinged feet and the bottoms of them get very dirty then you would benefit from a robot vacuum that can clean your floor daily whether you are there or not. They are amazingly good at cleaning surface dirt although maybe not so good at deep cleaning, and if you find yourself continually mopping or wiping your floors to keep them looking clean you will appreciate the difference the right tool can make to your home and sometimes your sanity.
You may think if you are buying a vacuum that it should be able to clean, and of course it can, but it may not be as suitable for your floor type as it might for another type. There are a lot of vacuums that work well on hardwood floors as the suction required is less than for carpets, so you may get a good result from a cheaper option but if you have rugs on your floor too and you want them to be cleaned, the thickness and colour of your rug can be a challenge to a robot vac. The darkness of your floors and rugs can also cause problems as the sensors on most robot vacuum cleaners see darkness or dark lines as an edge to a step so it won’t go past them.
The good thing about a robot vacuum is it’s closeness to the floor which can create a good suction for cleaning up light layers of dust or even dust bunnies from pet hair. The ability to get into corners and along edges is also important. Our main focus is on vacuuming up the dirt and dust but some vacuums have the capability to mop by adding a cloth to the base of the unit which can give an additional help with cleaning.
Mapping and Programming Options
If you’re not sure what I mean my mapping, it is the way the robot vacuum moves to clean your room. Some vacuums use technology to map the room by going around the edge of the room then moving back and forth within to clean the whole area. It uses the same technology to identify objects in its path and remember where it is so it doesn’t bump into the furniture but moves around it. Some robot vacuums use a random pattern where it just starts from standing then goes in many directions crossing over it’s own paths until it believes it has covered the whole area it can get to. Both types work but the first way is more efficient especially in bigger areas.
The other programming options available are scheduling cleaning, whether you can set your robot to come on at a time to suit you, whether you are in or out and how easy that is to do. Is there the option of a handset to program and direct your vacuum and is it available, and is there an app that you can use and can it be controlled via Alexa, all these things may have a bearing on which robot vacuum you choose and how much you would be prepared to pay for it.
Pet Hair and Allergen Filtration
If you have pets you will be looking for the best robot vacuum for pet hair but whether you have pets or not hepa filtration may be something that is important to you or members of your family, especially if they are affected by dust and pollens. If you are going to have a vacuum of any kind and you are cleaning daily you are going to be disturbing the dust in your house, especially when it just lays on top of the surface on a hardwood floor, hepa filtration can allow through smaller particles of dust, pollen and pet dander which can make it more bearable for someone with allergies.
There are a lot of the robot vacuum manufacturers taking this into account and are including hepa filters in their designs, most have 2 levels of filtration and can pick up a surprising amount of dirt from what looks like a clean floor. You will also be looking for a decent size of a dirt collecting bin on the vacuum so that it can clean a large area before needing to be emptied, if you use your cleaner daily this should become easier for you as you will be collecting less dirt. It might also be important how easy it is to clean your filters and how often they will need to be replaced and how readily you can get the replacements.
Running and Charging Time
Most robot vacs come with a docking station which needs to situated in an area that has enough space around it for your vacuum to dock into on its own. Depending on make and version of robot depends on how much running time you can get in one run, if you have a small room or open space this might not be as much of an issue to you than if you have a larger open area to clean.
Your vacuum should be able to return to it’s station to dock for re-charging when it runs down on power. The size of the cleaning area and accessibility to the dock can determine how successful it is in doing this, some robots can then return to cleaning and some don’t have the programming to carry on and have to start again from the beginning. The time it takes for your robot vacuum to charge each time it returns to the dock might also be a deciding factor if you have a larger floor space to cover and if it can’t do a clean in one run. It’s worth checking what a robot vacuum is capable of if you have a bigger house.
Whether you can easily afford any type of robot vacuum or you are on a budget and looking for the best cheap robot vacuum, it’s important to check on all the features against the price so you get the best that money can buy for your budget. The range of prices can be from $200 – $900 and obviously the newer models get upgraded to make them work better but that incurs added cost.
You can get basic machines that can do a good job for you, as you’re not looking for the strongest suction to get the dirt out of carpet, hard floors are a little easier to navigate on and clean. If the cost isn’t an issue then you will be looking more at the features that do what you want, controlling your vacuum from an app or being able to sync with Alexa is becoming more important to people as they automate their homes more or just if you love all the latest gadgets. That’s not to say that some of these features aren’t available on cheaper models if they are important to you. We hope to cover a wide price range of vacuums to show what you can get for your money.

Best robot vacuum for hardwood floors 2017
#1 Neato Botvac D5 Connected Navigating Robot Vacuum – Pet & Allergy
This Neato Botvac D5 Connected Navigating Robot Vacuum is our No1 choice because we feel it offers the best cleaning options for hardwood floors that we were looking for and has the most reasonable price.
One of the main things recognisable on the Neato vacuum cleaners is the D shape design, the main brush runs along the straight edge giving a wide cleaning capability and the design allows it to get right into the corners. It has a combination rubber and brush to get the best cleaning for dust and pet hair. The side brushes allow cleaning along the edge of the walls and the superb suction gets it all up.
There is a large dust bin on the top which can hold a large amount of dirt before emptying. The dust bin includes the filtration system and extra filters are easily available. Like all robot vacuums it needs to be emptied after each use and the brushes and filter cleaned, it’s quick and easy to do but also keeps the best suction when it’s done each time. The filter allows it to trap the smallest of particles making it ideal for homes with pets and family members with allergies.
Using laser smart navigation it scans and maps your room so it can navigate and clean your room in the most efficient and methodical manner, this allows up to 4 times quicker cleaning than robots that clean in random manner. It maps the perimeter of the room then backwards and forwards till it has covered the whole floor. The sensors can detect objects in the room and the robot will clean around them rather than continually bumping into them.
The Botvac D5 is controlled by the Neato app on your phone, it let’s you manually control your robot vac or to schedule it to clean on a daily basis even if you’re out. The app can send you notifications and if you’re machine get’s stuck somewhere and can’t get back to the dock, it has a find me function to locate it. You can sync your app with Amazon Alexa and Google home assistant so you can voice control your robot vacuum.
This robot is programmed so that it will remember where it is when the battery runs low, it will return to the dock to re-charge itself then go back to where it finished and will carry on cleaning until it has cleaned the whole area. The D5 connected can run for up to 90 minutes and can cover a total of 4500 square feet of floor which can take up to 3 run cycles.
#2 iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The iRobot range is probably the most well known and the iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is the newest in the range. The Roomba 980 is the standard iRobot circular shape but with all of the newest upgrades built into it.
This robot vacuum can work well on all kinds of flooring and has very strong suction, up to 10 times the basic Roomba, this allows it to deep clean carpets and to pick up all dirt from a hardwood floor. It adjusts automatically between different floor coverings without any adjustment.
The dust bin in situated on the base of the unit alongside the tangle-free brushes which are great for picking up pet hair or human hair without it tangling up and making brush maintenance much easier. The filter captures 99% of all particles as small as 10 microns, which makes it useful for allergy sufferers. There is a side brush on the underneath which helps to get all dirt along the edges and corners and all the brushes and filter replacements are readily available on Amazon.com.
The iRobot company has finally come on board with a better mapping system, it uses software called iAdapt 2.0 Navigation with Visual Localization and what it does is use a linear system where the robot starts immediately moving backwards and forwards in rows mapping the room as it goes and using the camera to identify objects which it remembers the location of. The benefit of this new system is a much faster and more efficient clean than any of the previous Roomba robots. It has a carpet boost for carpets so it can clean both types of flooring very well.
The robot vacuum is controlled using the enhanced iRobot HOME App, this is how you schedule you cleaning and you can customize cleaning preferences or just use it manually. It’s compatible with Amazon Alexa and the Google for voice activation if you want it. You can check your app for maintenance schedules on your machine and checking if it has cleaned or stopped for any reason.
This vacuum can clean for up to 120 minutes at a time and can clean a whole level of your home, if it runs down on charge it will remember where it finished and come back when it has re-charged itself. The Roomba 980 is the most expensive of the robot vacuums that we have reviewed and it is definitely a good choice for your home, but in a higher price range it doesn’t fit into the majority of customers budgets.
#3 Eufy RoboVac 11, High Suction, Self-Charging Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The Eufy RoboVac 11, High Suction, Self-Charging Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is a great choice if you’re on a budget, it works better on hardwood floors and thin carpets. This vacuum is only 3.1 inches high so will fit underneath a lot of furniture, it’s even lower than the iRobot vacuums.
The vacuum cleans with a rolling brush and 2 spinning side brushes with a high suction which allows it to clean hard floors really well. The dust bin is situated in the side of the robot which is circular in shape and is pretty large, the bin has a triple filtration system including a hepa filter which means it works well if you have a lot of pet hair to clean up and it cleans up dust from the floor to a standard that will help anyone with allergy problems.
This robovac cleans in a random pattern so probably not as efficient as the previous 2 vacuums but it can cover the floor quite well, it has 3 cleaning modes as well as the automatic cleaning and that is edge-cleaning, spot-cleaning and max concentrate cleaning for stubborn dirt areas.
The Eufy Robovac 11 is run by a remote control that lets you manually direct the robot to where you want it to start or you can use it to just press start and it will run automatically. You can also use the handset for the 3 cleaning modes that are offered and you can use it to set up a cleaning schedule for automatic cleaning.
This machine has a powerful battery and can run for 90 minutes before needing a re-charge it will then turn off the suction to save power while it returns to the docking station. On a cheaper model like this it doesn’t have the capability of remembering where it finished so it can’t go back to where it finished .
The brushes and filters are available on Amazon.com and with the price of the Eufy Robovac 11 making it a good value machine if money is an issue, even though it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles.
#4 bObsweep PetHair Robotic Vacuum Cleaner and Mop
The bObsweep PetHair Robotic Vacuum Cleaner and Mop is another reasonably priced robot vacuum that also has the added feature of a mop. Now this isn’t a mop that can tackle spills of water, it is a pad that can be attached on the base of the unit and it drags underneath to give an added cleaning and polishing capability. You can dampen this cloth so you can get a wet/wipe function but you don’t want a lot of water on the floor when you are vacuuming as it will get into the motor.
The bObsweep or Bob for short has a rotary brush underneath with a side brush for capturing the dirt at the edges and corners of a room. At 3.9 inches tall it might find it difficult to get under some of your furniture that might be accessed by a smaller unit.
It cleans in a waffle pattern and has a turbolift motor which gives it impressive suction when cleaning. The other thing that is different on the bObsweep and that isn’t used by other robot vacuums is the light on the bottom, you can see a blue shining light underneath the unit as it moves along and this is an ultra-violet light which sterilises the floor.
This robot vacuum and mop is designed for picking up pet hair and with a hepa filtration system and a large dust collecting bin this makes a very good functional unit which works very well on hardwood floors. This also works on carpet but it can’t handle thick pile and like other robots can struggle with dark floors and lines on carpets. They do provide stickers which can go over the drop sensors to allow it to work in these areas, but it will then be up to you to make sure it doesn’t encounter stairs or edges as that is the sensor that stops it falling off a step. If you do want to use this on carpets you won’t want to use the mop fitting at the same time as it will cause a drag when moving over carpet.
Bob comes with a remote control for manual use, and to direct the vacuum to certain places you want cleaning, you can start Bob from the remote or the control on the top of the vacuum. You can set up scheduling as well from the button controls on the docking station.
There are 3 cleaning modes,Waffle TrackTM, Wall TrackTM, and Spiral TrackTM technologies there are also 2 cleaning functions that can be used, a quick clean which takes 30 minutes which is very useful if you just want to clean a specific room, there is also the touch up which takes 15 minutes for a small area clean. Bob can run for 45 – 90 minutes depending on the floor type, when his battery goes down to 15% it will automatically return to dock for re-charge which takes up to 4 hours. You can set it to resume cleaning after re-charge but it’s not clever enough to know where to go back to.
#5 Samsung POWERbot R9000 Robot Vacuum
Samsung is a well known company and they have created a robot vacuum called the Samsung POWERbot R9000 Robot Vacuum, there are later versions of this but the improvements are reflected in the prices. The Samsung has adopted the D Shape in it’s design which allows the brush to be fitted along the straight edge giving you a 12 inch brush which is designed to pick up pet hair in a tangle-free way.
This vacuum also has larger wheels than the average vacuum which are called easy pass wheels which help to negotiate objects left on the floor and also help the transition between floor types be as smooth as possible. This POWERbot has a powerful suction and it can be used in 2 modes, normal which you would use on your hardwood floors and turbo which helps give a more thorough cleaning on carpets, although it has a turbo mode it still runs quietly compared to some robot vacuums.
The R9000 cleans using an on board digital camera and smart sensors which it uses to map the room and scan for objects, it cleans in an efficient back and forth pattern which makes cleaning quicker than a random pattern. The robot is controlled with a remote control, it has 3 modes where it allows you to manually start the vacuum and direct it to where you want it to start cleaning or it can work in automatic mode where it will clean wherever it can access till it runs out of charge. The other mode is spot-cleaning for specific dirty areas.
The vacuum can clean for about 60 minutes before re-charging which takes about 4 hours to do. The one thing you can’t do with this vacuum is to schedule cleaning, so if you need a vacuum to clean when you are out at work this isn’t for you, but if that isn’t a problem and you just want it to work when you are there then this is a good cleaner for your hardwood floors.
#6 ILIFE V3s Robotic Vacuum Cleaner with Smart Auto Cleaning Dry Mopping Remote control for Pets Hair
This ILIFE V3s Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is our best cheap robot vacuum. This is a circular shaped robot vacuum which has a dry mopping attachment, underneath there are 2 side brushes and the vacuum suction which gives a very good clean on a hardwood floor.
The height of this vacuum is only 3 inches so it can fit well under furniture if required. It is designed for pet hair cleaning where the side brushes sweep the dirt into the suction opening underneath.
The V3s cleans in a random pattern and works more efficiently on a hardwood floor rather than carpets. You have to press on the lid of the unit which raises it to access the dust bin inside. The bin is a good size and has 2 filters inside it, one is a hepa filter and one is a washable one, this makes it an effective vacuum for people who suffer from allergies. The filters need to be cleaned after each use as well as emptying the dust bin.
The Ilife V3s vacuum is operated with a remote control and can be scheduled to work when you’re out. You can use the remote to set the robot to automatic cleaning, to spot clean and to edge-clean, it will clean until it runs out of battery then it will return to the dock to re-charge.
This is a very quiet running vacuum and won’t be too intrusive in your life, it can run for up to 100 minutes before it needs to go back to the dock to charge which takes 4-5 hours to complete.
This is a basic machine but it has enough features to do the job and at a price which is affordable.
We would recommend that you check out our no1 choice the Neato Botvac D5 first as we believe it offers all what you would need for cleaning hardwood floors. It comes with scheduling capability and it will also work on all floor types, it’s a great all round machine.
Hopefully we have given you plenty of other robotic vacuum reviews to check out above if you want something different.
