On this page we’re going to be looking at our choice for the best robot vacuum for carpets 2017. If you have a carpeted home or mostly carpeted, you might find yourself having to vacuum every day to keep it looking clean. Carpets are great to keep the warmth in but they catch all the dirt and hair, especially if you have pets.If you’re looking for something that will make this daily chore a little more acceptable why not invest in a robot vacuum. We’ll be looking at what features we think are necessary in a robot vacuum for a carpeted floor which is how we came to our choice of the No1 robot vacuum for carpets which is the iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner.
Check out the Roomba 980 if you need extra suction for your carpets
With the growing amount of robot vacuums coming onto the market it’s hard to know where to begin when buying for your own personal needs, there are some which are just best for hardwood floors and aren’t that good on carpets, some are best for pet hair although a lot of robot vacuums are coming on board with hair collecting capability and hepa filters for allergens. If you don’t have any carpets you have a lot of choice but if you have a mix of hard floor and carpet or all carpet you need something that can give enough suction to get dirt out of the carpet pile.
A robot vacuum is not as powerful as a normal vacuum cleaner, it can pick up a lot of dirt and do a pretty good cleaning job but if you’re looking for a deep clean this isn’t for you. What these robots can do for you is give you consistent cleaning, like having your own cleaner coming in and giving your house a quick once over. The other thing that a robot vacuum can manage is cleaning underneath furniture, presuming you have a large enough gap, and it can manoeuvre around furniture without you having to move it. It will give you floors a good surface clean and if you’re doing it daily it can pick up hair and dirt before it gets walked deep into the pile, making your carpets look cleaner.
Criteria used to choose our best robot vacuum in 2017
Cleaning Ability – Suction
We felt that the most important feature needed for cleaning carpets is a good suction from the robot vacuum, it should either have a constant high suction or the option to choose it. A good roller underneath that can agitate the pile to allow the dirt to be exposed. The vacuum needs to be able to move over carpets easily and transition between different surfaces. Being able to clean quickly and efficiently is always a benefit, a good sized dust bin is good so it can clean the whole floor without being emptied. One of the other problems on a robot vacuum cleaner is dark floors or carpets with dark lines and patterns, the robot’s sensors see these things as a step so will not go over them, if your carpets are dark then a robot vac might not work for you.
Mapping and controls
You’re maybe wondering why mapping and controls are important when buying a vacuum, they all will have controls right? In terms of mapping, what we mean by that is the efficiency of the cleaning pattern, the newer models of robot vacuums have started to install more linear efficient mapping patterns that are quicker and can cover more floor space on a single charge, this is more helpful especially if you have a large floor space and if your vacuum has the programming to remember where it finished cleaning before recharging it won’t waste time going over the same bits over and over.
Controls are maybe less important unless you want to keep track of your robot, whether you like the idea of controlling it by an app on your phone, or by remote control, or even by voice control. It also means whether it is important to you to be able to schedule your vacuum cleaning automatically or whether you’re just going to use it when you are at home.
If you have pets, especially if they shed a lot then the ability to pick up pet hair is very important, but even if you don’t have pets, you will be surprised at how much hair we humans shed and if you have carpets it easily gets trapped in the fibres. You want your vacuum to have a good roller underneath that traps hair but is easy to clean to keep your robot working at it’s best.
It might also be important to you for your robot vac to have decent filters to help keep pollens and pet dander at bay.
Running and charging time
The main concern with running time is having enough charge to complete your floors in 1 or 2 cleaning cycles, this is going to be dependent on whether you have a large floor space and how much of it is carpeted. If your are running your vacuum on the strongest suction on carpets it will run down quicker, that could mean more cleaning cycles with charging in between. If you buy a vacuum that can return to where it finished previously this will be less of a problem than a robot vacuum that doesn’t have that function.
The prices of robot vacuums are quite variable but it tends to be the more features you get the more money you pay. If money is no object then going for the latest versions of these robots gives you the most up to date functionality and all the latest improvements, these things aren’t always necessary but nice to have so if money is tight and you’re looking for a cheap robot vacuum it will be a matter of choosing the most important function for you and the cheapest machine that can deliver that.

Best Robot Vacuum for Carpets 2017
#1 iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is our No1 choice so let’s go through what it offers and why we chose it.
The main consideration is the cleaning and suction power of this robot vacuum, it can clean on any type of floor surface and adjusts automatically, it also uses the AeroForce Cleaning System which gives a more powerful suction 10 times higher than the basic iRobot options which automatically kicks in when it goes over carpets to give the best results when removing dust and dirt.
The 980 has a massive run time of up to 120 minutes which can allow it to clean a larger area before it needs to return to the dock to re-charge. The vacuum comes supplied with 2 virtual wall barriers so if you would prefer to stop the robot cleaning in a specific area you can set it up to create a signal which it won’t cross.
The Roomba 980 is also programmed with a very efficient mapping system, it uses visual localization to map where it has cleaned using a linear pattern so if it needs to go back to the dock to re-charge it can remember where it finished and go back to the same spot to resume. It’s also only 3.6 inches high which allows it to fit under furniture to clean. It is controlled via your phone with the iRobot HOME app. With this app you can schedule the cleaning of your home and even decide if you want the vacuum to only do a single pass of the floor or to go over it twice. You can choose whether the robot will clean with the carpet boost or not, you can check on the areas cleaned and set up push notifications and all of this from your phone. This is also compatible with voice control systems like Alexa and Google assistant.
The iRobot Roomba 980 uses tangle-free brushes so that pet hair is captured easily and is less likely to wrap itself around and cause a lack of function. The filters also capture the smallest particles so that you can benefit from less dust if you or other family members are affected by dust or pet dander. If there is a downside on this vacuum then it has to be the price, at $913 this is not a cheap option but with all of the features this robot vacuum offers and the powerful cleaning it can do on your carpets we feel it is an investment that you won’t regret.
#2 Neato Botvac D5 Connected Navigating Robot Vacuum – Pet & Allergy
This Neato Botvac D5 Connected robot vacuum is our next choice for a carpet cleaning robot vacuum. The Botvac like our previous choice can clean on any floor surface with ease, it is designed in a D shape so that it has a long edge for a wide cleaning capability and to allow it to manoeuvre right into corners and get right up to walls.
The D5 cleans in a methodical way usually mapping the circumference of the room then going in a straight line back and forth pattern till it has cleaned the whole area, it’s programming allows it to remember where it left off when it goes back to the dock to charge the battery and to go right back there again when it’s ready to start again. It uses LaserSmart navigation to detect objects so it can clean around them without banging into them.
This Neato robot vacuum has a strong suction and precision brushes which can tackle dirt and pet hair with ease and it has an extra large dust bin to collect it in leaving your floors immaculately clean. There are ultra performance filters used in this robot vac which have the ability to clean to a level that can help with allergy sufferers.
The control of this robot vacuum is via the Neat app, this can be used to schedule your robot for automatic cleaning from anywhere between 1 – 7 days, you can manually control your machine or even find it if it gets lost or stuck somewhere and can’t find it’s way back to the base unit.
This unit can clean up to 4500 square feet of floor space, this would take approximately 270 minutes and 3 cleaning cycles of 90 minutes each charge. This is obviously only a guideline to give you an idea of it’s capabilities, your home and floor type might be different.
The Neato D5 Connected is a great machine for it’s price, currently selling for $499 it gives a lot of functionality for a middle of the range price. If money is more of an issue for you this robot vacuum cleaner will clean your carpets well for an acceptable price.
#3 ECOVACS DEEBOT N79 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
This robot vacuum is the cheapest version that we will be reviewing today. This ECOVACS DEEBOT N79 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is circular in design and has a 3 in 1 V shaped roller brush underneath with 2 side brushes. The Deebot has a brushless motor which allows it to have more rotations gives it more sucking power, it certainly makes it run quieter and in conjunction with the brushes should give a good clean even on carpets.
This robot vacuum can run for up to 100 minutes before re-charging and it will automatically return to the dock to do it, the charging time is approximately 4 – 5 hours.
There are 4 different cleaning modes on the N79, the automatic, single room, spot-cleaning and the edge-clean, the mapping function on the automatic is more of a random pattern, it will go in a straight line until it meets an object then change direction. If you feel it has missed some spots you can send it to clean the edges or go over a certain area with the spot-clean function. Although the Deebot has the programming to return to the dock by itself after it has re-charged it can’t go back and start cleaning again unless you manually set it off again and it can’t remember what it has done.
There are drop sensors installed so it can get to the edge of steps and know not to go further and anti-collision sensors to allow it to navigate around objects in the room.
This robot vac can be controlled by the remote control or by an app. It can be scheduled to clean when you are out. It works on carpet but its better on shorter pile carpets.
It does well cleaning up hair, pet or human hair although it doesn’t have the biggest dust collecting bin, so you may have to empty it more often, at least when you first start using it, it will bleep when the bin is full.
This robot vacuum uses a high efficiency filter unit which is installed inside the dust bin, as in all robots the filter needs to be cleaned regularly to keep good suction and replacements are available on Amazon.com.
As in most cheaper models this robot vacuum has it’s limitations but it is generating good reviews from buyers and we thought it was well worth bringing this machine to your attention.
#4 Samsung POWERbot R9000 Robot Vacuum
We’ve added the Samsung POWERbot R9000 Robot Vacuum to our list because of it’s cleaning ability, they have made this version of the powerbot have 10 times more suction than the previous models and it comes with 2 power modes, normal and turbo. The Samsung also adopt the D shape for their robot vacuums giving a good wide 12 inches of cleaning surface.
The brush is a combo brush which can pick up pet hair easily with less tangling. This machine runs quietly even when the turbo mode is chosen and they have designed the dust collection to be controlled with CycloneForce technology which uses centrifugal motion to force the dust and debris into an outer chamber of the dust bin to keep the suction power strong throughout it’s cleaning cycle. The R9000 can traverse any type of flooring and deal with objects left on the floor easily with it’s larger EasyPass wheels and the large dust bin lets it run for longer without the need to be emptied.
This Samsung robot uses the digital camera which is integral to the vacuum and other sensors to map the room and avoid obstacles. It uses the sensors to work to an efficient linear pattern for cleaning, it’s very good at not bumping into things and will run for about an hour depending on which cleaning mode you use and then can return to the dock automatically to charge itself back up before resuming. It takes about 4 hours to charge up.
This robot vac is controlled using a remote control, this can be used for setting it to go and clean automatically or you can manually direct it to where you want it to go. It also has a spot-clean function for spills. The one thing this robot vacuum doesn’t do though is allow you to schedule cleaning for when you are out, if you need this function you need to look at other options, but if you are happy to just set it cleaning when you are around then this is a good robot vacuum to go for. This isn’t the cheapest vacuum on the market but it offers a lot of functionality for that price.
#5 iRobot Roomba 650 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The iRobot Roomba 650 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is one of the most popular robot vacuums online. It’s currently price to fit most budgets and it’s a very competitive price for an iRobot vacuum.

The 650 can run for 60 minutes, the mapping is programmed in a random pattern so there is no prescribed path that it will follow and it may clean parts of your room more than some other parts but it will cover most if not all of your room, although it won’t be in the most efficient way.
The Roomba 650 uses sensors to detect objects but it can still bump into them although it does come with a virtual wall that you can place near objects you don’t want it to bump into or across spaces yo don’t want it to go into.
