Our top choice of robot vacuum for carpets is the brand new iRobot Roomba S9+. It has deviated from the normal Roomba circular shape to sport a D-shape design which makes it easier to get into corners and along edges of the walls.
It uses vSlam(visual simultaneous localization and mapping technology )camera sensors to create a map of the area and track it’s location as it’s cleaning. It can remember multiple maps to cover different levels of your home.
It uses smart mapping to sense objects in the room and map the whole floor so you can clean by room, rather than having to clean the whole of the floor space every time. The dust and dirt is filtered through a high performance filter which helps to keep the air clean if you suffer from allergies. This S9+ is even clever enough to go back to the base to be automatically emptied when it is full of dirt. It can do this 30 times before the sealed bag in the base needs emptying. The whole dirt collection unit is sealed so no dust gets into the air, even when emptying.
You can use your phone to start the robot cleaning or set a cleaning schedule. The app will keep you informed of the maps, whether the vacuum has cleaned on schedule and whether there is any maintenance required among other things. You can even connect to Alexa and ask your robot to clean whenever you need it to.
The S9+ can run for up to 2 hours and the mapping function plans the most efficient route to clean your home. If it runs out of charge before it has finished it can return to the dock to recharge then go back to where it was and carry on cleaning.
This iRobot S9+ is on the higher end of the price scale but you do get what you pay for.

3. iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner
The iRobot Roomba 980 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is 2nd Roomba choice so let’s go through what it offers and why we chose it.
The main consideration is the cleaning and suction power of this robot vacuum, it can clean on any type of floor surface and adjusts automatically, it also uses the AeroForce Cleaning System which gives a more powerful suction 10 times higher than the basic iRobot options which automatically kicks in when it goes over carpets to give the best results when removing dust and dirt.
The 980 has a massive run time of up to 120 minutes which can allow it to clean a larger area before it needs to return to the dock to re-charge. The vacuum comes supplied with 2 virtual wall barriers so if you would prefer to stop the robot cleaning in a specific area you can set it up to create a signal which it won’t cross.
The Roomba 980 is also programmed with a very efficient mapping system, it uses visual localization to map where it has cleaned using a linear pattern so if it needs to go back to the dock to re-charge it can remember where it finished and go back to the same spot to resume.
It’s only 3.6 inches high which allows it to fit under furniture to clean. It is controlled via your phone with the iRobot HOME app. With this app you can schedule the cleaning of your home and even decide if you want the vacuum to only do a single pass of the floor or to go over it twice.
You can choose whether the robot will clean with the carpet boost or not, you can check on the areas cleaned and set up push notifications and all of this from your phone. This is also compatible with voice control systems like Alexa and Google assistant.
The iRobot Roomba 980 uses tangle-free brushes so that pet hair is captured easily and is less likely to wrap itself around and cause a lack of function. The filters also capture the smallest particles so that you can benefit from less dust if you or other family members are affected by dust or pet dander.
This is not the cheapest option but with all of the features this robot vacuum offers and the powerful cleaning it can do on your carpets we feel it is an investment that you won’t regret.
4. Roborock S5 Robotic Vacuum
The Roborock S5 is a cheaper option that offers you some of the top features of the more expensive robot vacuums.
When it comes to the suction capability, there are different modes that you can select. It has a max suction mode with an automatic turbo boost for carpets.
There is a brush roll on the bottom and a side spinning brush which collects the dirt from the edges and underneath for a clean carpet. It does have an issue with dark carpets and can’t handle longer pile, so it’s worth noting.
The battery can offer up to 150 minutes of cleaning time which is very acceptable and there is room mapping which means it will clean in the most efficient route so you get the most clean for the time available. It can cover 1000 sq ft in around 60-90 minutes and if it does run out of charge it will return to the dock, recharge itself and go back to finish cleaning.

This is reasonably priced for the features it offers and well worth a look.
5. Samsung POWERbot R7040 Robot Vacuum
The Samsung Powerbot R7040 is a D shaped robot vacuum with good suction ability needed for carpets. Not only does it suck well but with it’s patented edge cleaning feature it can clean right up to the edges of the walls. This is a rubber blade which reaches out from the straight edge of this Powerbot vacuum like a scoop and drags the dirt in from the edge and corners.
With 2 chambers in the dust canister, the R7040 uses centrifugal force to contain the dirt in the outer chamber and leave the inner free from getting clogged up, keeping the suction strong.
Large wheels on the base make it easy for the robot vacuum to move over the floor, even if the pile is thicker and still allow space for suction.
This Samsung vacuum still gives the automation you would want from the app which you can download onto your smart phone.
It will map the room for the quickest route around the floors of your rooms while avoiding obstacles using the fullview sensors on board. These help protect your furniture from the robot crashing into it.

User guide to the best carpet robot vacuum
Cleaning Ability – Suction
We feel that the most important feature needed for cleaning carpets is a good suction from the robot vacuum, it should either have a constant high suction or the option to choose it.
A good roller underneath that can agitate the pile to allow the dirt to be exposed. The vacuum needs to be able to move over carpets easily and transition between different surfaces.
Being able to clean quickly and efficiently is always a benefit, a good sized dust bin is good so it can clean the whole floor without being emptied.
One of the other problems on a robot vacuum cleaner is dark floors or carpets with dark lines and patterns, the robot’s sensors see these things as a step so will not go over them, if your carpets are dark then a robot vac might not work for you.
Mapping and controls
You’re maybe wondering why mapping and controls are important when buying a vacuum? In terms of mapping, we mean the camera or laser sensors on board the vacuum being able to identify the layout of the room and create an efficient cleaning pattern.
Newer models of robot vacuums have started to install more linear, efficient mapping patterns that are quicker and can cover more floor space on a single charge. This is more helpful especially if you have a larger floor.
They can clean using the quickest route while avoiding your furniture obstacles. More importantly, some can now allow you to identify each area in the map so you can clean by room. Now you can clean the dirtier spaces more often without having to do the whole floor.
You can control most robot vacuums manually using the buttons on the top but if you want to be able to schedule your vacuum cleaning automatically, you will need the appropriate app. This lets your phone be the remote control so you can take advantage of the maps, extra suction and virtual walls.
If you have pets, especially if they shed a lot then the ability to pick up pet hair is very important. But even if you don’t have pets, you will be surprised at how much hair we humans shed and if you have carpets it easily gets trapped in the fibres.
You want your vacuum to have a good roller underneath that traps hair but is easy to clean to keep your robot working at it’s best.
Many are now rubber or a mixture of rubber and bristle to get the best pick up.
It might also be important to you for your robot vac to have decent filters to help keep pollens and pet dander at bay.
Running and charging time
The main concern with running time is having enough charge to complete your floors in 1 or 2 cleaning cycles, this is going to be dependent on whether you have a large floor space and how much of it is carpeted.
If your are running your vacuum on the strongest suction on carpets it will run down quicker, that could mean more cleaning cycles with charging in between. If you buy a vacuum that can return to where it finished previously this will be less of a problem than a robot vacuum that doesn’t have that function.
The prices of robot vacuums are quite variable but it tends to be the more features you get the more money you pay.
If money is no object then going for the latest versions of these robots gives you the most up to date functionality and all the latest improvements.
These things aren’t always necessary but nice to have, so if money is tight and you’re looking for a cheaper robot vacuum it will be a matter of choosing the most important function for you and the cheapest machine that can deliver that.
We would recommend that you have a look at our No1 choice the Roomba S9+ first when looking for a robot vacuum for carpets, but if you are put off by the price we have tried to give you a variety of price options above.
If you’d prefer to choose from the many options available then check out robot vacuums with decent suction first as that is important for your carpets. Look for a long running time because carpets use up more power and the room mapping can be more efficient.
After that sit back and enjoy the time you’ll save not having to vacuum the floor yourself and be amazed at how well they work.
